Ultrasound (diagnostic sonography) is a safe, non-invasive and usually pain-free medical imaging technique that uses sound waves to visualize internal body structures including tendons, muscles, joints, vessels and internal organs. Doppler is a specialized ultrasound study that examines blood vessels for narrowing, blockages and venous malformation. Doppler ultrasound may be useful to differentiate vascular from non-vascular structures in any location.
